THIS ISSUE:

Top Ten Things Not To Eat

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I took a week off from writing the Don't Diet Digest.  (Actually, I was off eating Ding-Dongs.)  Just kidding!

I have what I hope is a very useful issue for you this week.  It isn't meant to be scary, but it IS meant to be sobering.

How's your spring going?  Are you looking forward to summer?

I just got the results of my recent annual physical:

WEIGHT:  Great.  Nearly ten pounds less.  Stay that way.
CHOLESTEROL:  Interesting--lost 25 POINTS!  I was 180, now I'm 155.  All from using the Real People Don't Diet strategy the last year.
EXERCISE:  Must start with both cardio and resistance.  Will be 40 soon and will begin to lose bone mass.

So, some good news, and some bad news.

My new goal is to begin using the RPDD principle to start an exercise program that becomes routine and becomes daily, in one way, shape or form.

The good news for YOU is the fact that following the RPDD way of eating will result in lower cholesterol--without drugs!  Keep it up.

While working this morning I turned on the TV for some background noise.  I landed on a channel where some guy was talking about health.  His name was Dr. Ted Broer.  He was giving his audience a list called the "Top Ten Things Not To Eat".

Now, I love Top Ten Lists.  David Letterman does a great job coming up with some funny ones.  If I could stay awake past 11 p.m. I'd still be enjoying them.

But this list wasn't quite as funny.

A lot of people I know eat every single one of the ten items.  As for myself, I eat/absorb two out of the ten on a daily basis.

I'll give you the list, with my comments, and then I'll give you a link to Dr. Broer's most recent book.  Get it out of the library or buy it--it's up to you.  Whatever you do, keep an open mind.

1.  Sodium Nitrite
--found in deli meats and hot dogs
--increases chances of leukemia by 9 times
--why are we feeding hot dogs to our children?
--we buy Applegate Farms organic beef hot dogs and Hormel Natural deli meats, none of which contain nitrites

2.  Avoid chemical sweeteners
--Stevia is the only healthy alternative
--aspartame plus hydrogenated fats creates a lethal chemical reaction in your body
--just stop doing diet soda, PERIOD!

3.  Hydrogenated Oils/Trans Fats
--thankfully, most foods are now labeling whether or not they're trans-fat-free
--BEST NEWS:  Fritos have no hydrogenated oils

4.  Shellfish
--my husband and I have never eaten shellfish, so we're safe here
--"Lobster is nothing but a giant cockroach"--YUCK

5.  Junk Foods
--Twinkies, Ring Dings and Ding Dongs
--Oreos, most store-bought cookies and snacks
--are these in your kids' lunch boxes?
--we don't buy these and we very rarely eat these

6.  Olean
--avoid, avoid, avoid

7.  Chlorine/Flouride
--found in your municipal water supplies
--a home reverse osmosis system is best
--one hot shower can be the equivalent of 8 glasses of contaminated water, since your skin absorbs stuff
--this one makes me REALLY mad, since we don't want flouride or chlorine in our water...but we have no choice
--saving our pennies for a reserve osmosis system, but in the meantime we use Brita filter and are buying a $50 showerhead with filtration system

8.  High Fat Dairy Products
--pasteurized and homogenized products are bad for you
--try to buy dairy products that are hormone-free
--look for organic products
--this is a tricky one with RPDD, since we do eat dairy a fair amount, but sticking with non-fat and organic as much as possible will help

9.  Coffee
--OUCH, OUCH, OUCH
--he says once in a great while
--I drink 1-2 cups a day, no sugar or cream
--I wonder if quitting altogether will produce major benefits?  Is it worth it?  I need to read the book for more info.

10.  Alcohol
--I know studies show red wine offers some health benefits.  Truth is, you could get those same benefits from supplements, if you prefer.
--I think this is a very personal decision
--Broer made a great point: "...no one has ever said 'My life was a mess and then I started drinking and everything turned around'.
--think we can all agree that excessive drinking isn't good for you, period

So there you have it.  The Top Ten Things Not To Eat (or drink).

The good news is, as I went down the list, I realized the RPDD way of eating (remember, not dieting, just eating) may knock at least half these items off your "to eat" list anyway.  For example, I avoid foods with trans fats because they tend to be high in sugar and carbs.  I also avoid junk food most of the time as well as alcohol, for the same reasons.

I've known Leo since my first day in first grade with the scary and terrifying Sister Helen.  We lost touch in high school but imagine my surprise when I found out he was living in the same dorm as me on the first day of college!  I don't know where Sister Helen is but Leo's been busy helping people get out of debt for years.  We've stayed in touch and I recommend his program wholeheartedly, if you want to organize your debt, make a plan to pay it off and even figure out how long it will take.  If you like to laugh make sure you sign up for his newsletter.  He's a hoot.
